A sequel to The Dark Knight will swoop into cinemas in July 2012.

Warner Bros has confirmed planning for the next instalment of the Batman film franchise has begun.

Director Christopher Nolan will be at the helm again after bringing the Caped Crusader (Christian Bale) back to the big screen in 2005's Batman Begins and 2008's The Dark Knight, which earned over $US1 billion ($1.08 billion) worldwide and garnered Australian actor Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his role as The Joker.

No other details about the film have been announced.

What do we want from Batman 3?

Now that we have a release date for Batman 3... What do we want to see in the next installment

With the next installment of Batman a little over two years away. what is it that we would like to see in the next movie. Such as Villains, possible love interests, cameos, etc.

ThaBatman- There are quite a few things that I would like to see in the next installment. Obviously the return of Wayne Manor and the Batcave. A new batmobile.. preferably this one that I saw in someones Fancast a while back.. sorry i forgot who posted it



Batman has many other vehicles at his disposal.

I know a lot of you will disagree with me on this one, but I would like to see Robin or at least Dick Grayson in the next one (I am a huge Nightwing fan, hints the Tv show fan cast) and also possibly a mention on Barbara Gordon from The Commissioner.

now for love interest.. maybe Talia Al Ghul or Selina Kyle... Although we have seen the story of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Selina Kyle/Catwoman love life, which i dont know if we should repeat. Im sure if they do decide to do this again, then they will bring in another Villain and not The Penguin. I saw maybe Talia Al Ghul. possibly because im watch Batman Begins as im typing this or just the fact that I would like to see her want to take revenge because of what happened to her father.

Maybe by taking an idea out of the Spider-man 3 movie and attack his heart. Try to get Bruce to fall in love with her and then reveal who she really is. maybe not. that could be one of the reasons that Spider-man 3 failed.. focusing to much on love. And if not either one of those two. Why not just go ahead and bring in Vickie Vale

Now for other Villains, I would love to see Johnny Depp as the Riddler,

but truthfully The Riddler isn't much of a challenge for The Dark Knight..
Batman should have a physical challenge in the next movie. Maybe Bane. Bane was a GENIUS, one of Batman's smartest enemies and "Batman and Robin" made him this idiot whom was Poison Ivy's lackey?

Now im not saying this should happen in the movie, but just maybe he should be a villain.

Maybe the Black Mask, The penguin, maybe Two-face is really in Arkham (could return), Deadshot, and many others. Batman has a lot of villains that could be seen in the next Batman.

Cameos. As I stated earlier I was watching Batman Begins, never really paid much attention to the fact that Victor Zsasz has a small cameo in the movie.
For Batman 3, maybe The Penguin could have a small cameo or atleast state that he does exist. Batman could be driving through town in and pass by the Iceberg Lounge.

As for Batman himself, Batman isn't much of a detective and Genius as he should be in the Nolan series. Batman usually goes to Lucius Fox for things that are needed instead of creating them himself. He should go to Fox every now and then, but not for everything that is needed. I like the fact the he re engineered the bullet himself in TDK. but other than that i cant really think of anything from the series he has done him self.

I want to see a more athletic Batman and one with more fighting moves. Batman knows multiple forms of martial arts, but keeps using the same moves in this series. Batman has a lot more Gadgets and he needs to use his Detective skills and also more silent takedowns. (I know im talking like this is for Arkaham Asylum 2)
Just things I would like to see in this next movie.

“The Dark Knight” opened in theaters to a record-smashing $158.4 million, which has yet to be beaten in an opening weekend. The film raked in $533.4 million by the conclusion of its box-office run, which made it only the second film to ever cross the $500 million mark at the time. Since then, “Avatar” also did so. Globally, “The Dark Knight” has earned just in excess of $1 billion, which puts it in the league of top-five films of all time. The film had a production budget of $185 million.

1. The new “Batman 3” will again be directed by Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight,” “The Prestige,” “Batman Begins,” “Insomnia,” “Memento” and the upcoming 2010 film “Inception”).

2. The screenplay for “Batman 3” will again be written by Jonathan Nolan (“The Dark Knight”). David S. Goyer gets a screenplay credit this time. He wrote the story for “The Dark Knight”.

3. So far, we know about the following four return casting selections for “Batman 3”: Christian Bale (as Bruce Wayne and Batman), Gary Oldman (as Commissioner Gordon), Morgan Freeman (as Lucius Fox) and Michael Caine (as Alfred).

4. Benjamin Melniker and Michael E. Uslan are executive producers. Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven and Emma Thomas are producers.

5. Wally Pfister returns as cinematographer.

6. Nathan Crowley returns as production designer.

7. Lindy Hemming returns as costume designer.

8. Christopher Nolan is currently in post-production on “Inception”. There currently isn’t an official title for “The Dark Knight” sequel or start date for filming.

9. “The Dark Knight” opened on July 18, 2008 and “Inception” debuts July 16, 2010.

10. The new “Batman 3” film will debut in conventional and IMAX theaters almost exactly four years after “The Dark Knight” opened.

11. The summer of 2012 is shaping up to be a major geek movie season. Marvel’s “The Avengers” is set for May 4, “Madagascar 3” is coming on May 18, board-game adaptation “Battleship” is set for May 25, “Brave” from Disney/Pixar is set for June 15, the “Star Trek” sequel is coming on June 29, the rebooted “Spider-Man” is set for July 3 and “Batman 3” is slated for July 20.

Fan-Made, Fake Posters For ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ or ‘Untitled Batman Project’

CHICAGO – There was talk of a sequel even before “The Dark Knight” hit theaters and obliterated box-office records. That’s all we still have at this point, but we also have a pair of decent, fan-made posters for “The Dark Knight” sequel.


Though IMDb lists the poster above in its entry for the next “The Dark Knight” film, which is currently being called “The Dark Knight Returns” or the “Untitled Batman Project,” this imageis a fan-made creation and can be found in this GameSpot discussion thread on Aug. 30, 2008.

Though so much of the project is still up in the air and unofficial, what’s currently being called “The Dark Knight Returns” (which may or may not be the sequel’s actual title) or the “Untitled Batman Project” (as it’s now listed on IMDb) has a fan-made poster above that dates back at least to Aug. 30, 2008 in this GameSpot discussion thread.

Though the poster above is currently displayed within the images for the “Untitled Batman Project” on IMDb with a release date for the film in 2011, we can confirm that it is fake. A number of other posters for “The Dark Knight Returns” have surfaced online and also have been confirmed as fake, fan-made creations (see below). While it’s too early to speculate on casting news, Aaron Eckhart has been in the news recently on the topic.

COULD Billy Zane be in line for a role in Batman 3 or the next Superman film?

Rumours have claimed Zane has met Christopher Nolan, who is directing the sequel to The Dark Knight as well as producing and overseeing a relaunch of the Superman franchise.

The 44-year-old actor is already well-known to comic book fans for his cult portrayal of The Phantom in the 1996 movie.

It's been speculated that he may have been approached about playing Lex Luthor.

Back on April Fool's Day, the website Latino Review ran a very creative and well-crafted spoof about the next Batman and Superman films. It included a reference to Luthor and to Billy Zane being in line for the role.

A couple of weeks later, Live for Films said two different sources had told them Zane had been talking to Christopher Nolan but wasn't able to clarify whether it was for a role in the next Superman or in Batman 3.

The site said the rumour was entirely unconnected to the earlier April Fool's joke. A poll saw a majority of 57 per cent back the idea of Zane as Lex Luthor.

The story then spread to Superman Super Site, who pointed out Zane had been linked to the Luthor role prior to Bryan Singer's Superman Returns.

At the time, I had held off on reporting this unsubstantiated piece of gossip but as it's persisting in some corners of the internet I have decided it's worth a mention.

If nothing else, it provides a launchpad for debate on several key points: Should Lex Luthor be in the next Superman movie, and would Billy Zane be a good choice for the role or for any other Superman villain? Or is he in line for a part in Batman 3, such as the Riddler?

Ideas on how Christopher Nolan may revamp The Batwing: The Spirit of Gotham



This is my vision for the Batwing done Nolan style, and I believe there's a very strong chance of seeing at least a few elements of the ideas I'm about to put forth realized in Batman 3.

I think almost all of us are looking forward to seeing a new Batwing in the third installment of Christopher Nolan's franchise. And as has been tradition for the books and the movies, Batman inevitably ends up with a new incarnation of his aerial toy sooner or later.


I find myself extremely curious as to how DC/Warner Bros. are going to introduce a version that modernizes the classic and makes as memorable an entrance as the Tumbler did in Batman Begins.

Without making it something as garish as Burton's, or the ridiculous follow up versions. Burton's Batwing was a novel and memorable attempt, but as we're all aware, the "Nolanverse" in its totalianaristic realism doesn't allow for anything quite so "imaginitive". Anyway, as stunning a concept as it was in its time, by today's standards, Burton's Batwing seems a bit corny.


I got this idea while reading an article in Popular Science quite a few months ago, and have been mulling it over ever since. Seems there are tentative plans for a new pilot-less version of the B2 Stealth Bomber, and in that article it referred to the original design specification as a "Batwing" - so this may not be too far off.

Nolan and Nathan Crowley actually incorporated elements of the Stealth jets into the Tumbler.



I'm pretty sure there would be no problem with Lucius Fox cleverly and secretly procuring a "mothballed" or surplus B2 Stealth Bomber, through government contacts, and modifying it to Bruce Wayne's/Batman's custom specs. As it needs to serve not only his technological needs, but also function as symbolism, I think a very clever way of accomplishing this would be to outfit the new Batwing with active camouflage that is capable of displaying the bat symbol during night and day.



The cost of each aircraft averaged US$737 million in 1997 dollars. Total procurement costs averaged US$929 million per aircraft, which includes spare parts, equipment, retrofitting, and software support. The total program cost, which includes development, engineering and testing, averaged US$2.1 billion per aircraft (in 1997 dollars).



We don't exactly know what Nolan's "Waynecorp." is valued at, but if it's anywhere on the level of the upper fortune 500, it seems feasible several billion dollars could be rounded up and "invested". What makes it even more possible is that it's a twenty year old+ program (considering black budget time), making its public notoriety much less than that of even a F-22 Raptor (which are all over movies recently and most prominently of course - Transformers).

This fact would make it more easily prone to having the government "lose one". It is a sleek and elegant design and would fit directly in with the general motif of the Nolanverse... probably better than any other existing aircraft out there. Again it is already technically a "Batwing".



-2 internal bays for 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) of ordinance. (including a refurbished Tumbler w/ Batpod)
-silent running and stealth in all wavelengths
-adaptive active camouflage allowing display of bat symbol
-non lethal weapons
-thrust vectoring (allowing for vertical takeoffs/landings and hovering)
-capable of remote operation and self destruction, just like the Tumbler

Some of these design elements will supposedly actually be incorporated into the tentative version of the real aircraft, aside from of course the bat related stuff.

If you want to get deep into the symbolism and psychodrama metaphor of it all (Which Nolan likes to do), these aircraft are really potential agents of the apocalypse - which brings into resolve the question of the greater good. If Batman were to acquire one, and modify it with The Tumbler and non-lethal weapons, it could possibly serve a little more benevolent purpose. Each individual aircraft in service goes under the codename: Spirit of "whatever city", so Batman's would of course become The "Spirit of Gotham". If the military were to allow its use, I feel it would, at the very least, give the program alot of publicity and serve to already boost its uber justice seeking and crime fighting image - Food for thought. Considering how generous the US Government's been with Transformers, I mean come on, even though he's a vigilante and his procurement of the jet would technically be illegal, everybody loves Batman and his Batwing - even the military!

One last thing: It is well known that Batman's suit redesign was actually made a plot point in The Dark Knight; this take on the Batwing would open up some unique and dramatic possibilities for a similar opportunity.

He expressed interest in playing the Joker, but Nolan shared that he sees Williams more likely to play, "Lunatic #3" in the Arkham Asylum. Williams and Nolan have worked together before. They shot the thriller Insomnia together back in 2003.

Jay Baruchel's dream role in Batman 3

CANADIAN actor Jay Baruchel will next be seen on screen in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, released in the UK on August 13, in which he stars as the protegé of a wizard played by Nicolas Cage.

After that, the 28-year-old says he wants to graduate from sorcerer to superhero as Batman's sidekick Robin in the follow-up to The Dark Knight.

Baruchel told Comic Heroes magazine that costumed crimefighters seemed a natural progression from his fantasy roles in How to Train Your Dragon and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

He explained: "If there is any modern mythology to be found, it's in comics. I would be lying if I didn't think I was born to play Robin. That would be bad ass.

"My whole life, the only parts I thought I was supposed to play were Robin and the Dauphin from Henry V."

But he also has another comic book character in mind in the longer term, adding: "If I'm being perfectly honest - and this is the part that obviously I won't be suitable for for another 20 years - my favourite character of all time is Frank Castle, the Punisher. That's the one for me.

"I don't know that I'm ever meant to be him but that's my character. Nic Cage's guys are Superman and Ghost Rider. Those are the two that mean the most to him. For me it's Frank Castle."

This isn't the first time an actor has been linked to the role of Robin. Tabloid nonsense has suggested that Zac Efron and Shia LaBeouf are in line to play the boy wonder, while Heroes actor Milo Ventimiglia once said he was keen to appear as the adult version of Robin, who calls himself Nightwing.

In July 2008, Batman star Christian Bale said he would quit the franchise if the filmmakers decided to introduce the caped crusader's sidekick.

I think it's highly unlikely we will see Robin in Batman 3 or that Baruchel would be the right person for the role. Nice try Jay, but I think we can rule this out along with Cher for Catwoman, Eddie Murphy for Riddler and all the other mismatched suggestions.

Christopher Nolan's Batman 3 is due out in July 2012 and the director recently revealed he avoids reading such casting rumours.

Speaking at the Hero Complex Film Festival in Los Angeles, Nolan said: "Honestly, I don't really look at the internet. At a very early stage in taking on Batman, I realised it wasn't going to be helpful to look at what they say. I've always taken the view that everybody feels very passionate about these characters and they have a lot of ideas and a lot of thoughts on what should or shouldn't be done.

"You'll hear things from the studio sometimes, it's clear that they've been reading stuff online, but you have to just sort of [let it go]," he said. "I got a call saying 'Why did you cast Cher?'. So I actually don't have email or a cell phone. It gives me a little more time to think."
