I enjoyed your article on Warhead 2000. I think it would have been great if Timothy Dalton had done a Sean Connery and returned once more in an unofficial film.
It's a pity that we can't have a rival series now.

Hello,
I must admit...the treatment / plot of "Warhead 2000" that I read about sounded intriguing!
Bond traveling through sewers, deadly mechanical sharks, water skiing the Hudson River, and a finale where 007 parachutes on top of the Statue Of Liberty! Not so much of a re-hash of "Thunderball".
I agree Harry...I didn't get my fill of Timothy Dalton as 007 but like the article said, I doubt he ever would've done a rival James Bond movie...because he was and still is very close to the Broccoli's. (Cubby and Dana when they were alive, also Babs and Michael G.)
I'm sorry...I really disliked the idea of Connery playing a"villain" in a James Bond movie. Even in his seventies...he still personifies the role of 007. Not to mention...his appearance as the 'baddie' in "The Avengers". YIKES!!!
Take Care!

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

Even though the rival series is no more, wouldn't be interesting to see Pierce do an unofficial Bond?

This is a must read for anybody who wondered if Kevin McClory had some original ideas!! The article title, referring to Connery, is "For Sean's Eyes Only". You can read all about the 007 film that never came about at: news.scotsman.com/movies.cfm?id=987092007Enjoy!!!

I don't think I ever really saw Liam Neeson as Bond but stranger things have happened and probably will again.

The Scotsman article was really interesting. Thanks Alec! It deals with the 1977 version of Warhead. It also includes this statement: "But fans can only speculate just what Warhead might have done for 007 at a time when, in the view of some critics, Roger Moore's lightweight innuendo was reducing the series to the level of the Carry On films. "Yes that's right, Roger Moore was awful wasn't he. He was just about to make the blockbusting Moonraker and Spy Who Loved Me and then followed that up with For Your Eyes Only. Wasn't Roger awful.

Yes, it's interesting that he doesn't realize the film he describes would have been equally over-the-top. Can you imagine if Roger Moore had battled mechanical sharks?!

Even though the rival series is no more, wouldn't be interesting to see Pierce do an unofficial Bond? I think that door has been closed now. Perhaps they might try and make the Thomas Crown sequel more Bondish.

I'm sure these people carry a small handbook which tells them what the trendy line on everything is. Roger Moore was crap, most James Bond films are crap, Sean Connery films were serious thrillers blah, blah. I'd have more respect for someone who put forward a mildly original or unconventional view. At least you'd know they were able to think for themselves.

What irritates me most is when people describe great Bond films as guilty pleasures. Why should you feel guilty about enjoying great films that are equally adored by millions of people. At least we have a member list full of Shepherds on this forum.

The "Bond Formula" is what made the character such an international phenomenon. If Connery had been asked to play the character as a morose hero in a generic action film, the series wouldn't have lasted beyond one or two films. People don't seem to realize that, at the time, audiences had never seen something as imaginative as a James Bond film. How sad that the series is now reduced to imitating its peers rather than topping them.

How sad that the series is now reduced to imitating its peers rather than topping them. Hello, I couldn't agree more! Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman set a standard back in 1962 that quite simply blew people away! The huge budget and expenses on clothes, cars, and exotic locales, the women, the villains, their henchman are all exclusively 007!!! Back in 1995 when Pierce Brosnan stepped in after a brutal legal battle and a six year hiatus...the Bond series proved it could not only could be more contemporary...but would still be the benchmark by which all other action films are measured. Bond movies have always been "larger than life"...and in a class by themselves. If I hear one more comparison between Jason Bourne and our beloved James Bond, I am going to frigging' SCREAM!!!! I personally hold a certain rogue agent with amnesia responsible for the re-booting of our beloved James Bond franchise! Shame on Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson for following the trend, not setting one. I quote Carly Simon: "Nobody Does It Better"! Take Care!

I quote Carly Simon: "Nobody Does It Better"! Unfortunately, EON apparently thought otherwise.
