I love Moonraker (It's hard not to). Although loosely based on Fleming's novel and many Bond fans consider it to be the black sheep of the franchise, It was the first Bond film I can remember watching and it's one I never tire of viewing.
Great locations, characters and some brilliant dialogue. With Sir Rog on top form again, it's a 9 from me.

8. The balance of jokes and action is not quite as good as TSWLM but it's still an enjoyable film with a lot of spectacular action and well done FX.

After the success of TSWLM Cubby had a bigger budget. But how do you make a film even bigger than the biggest Bond movie ever ? The success of the sci fi films in the 70's helped him make up his mind. There was only one place to send Bond. Space.
Roger Moore now seemed to be in a competition with George Hamilton over 'who has the best sun tan'. His permanent sun tan was impressive. He looked older in some scenes, but youthful in other scenes. Generally he was what you would expect from Bond, suave and debonair. He had gained confidence from TSWLM and strolled around with a confidence not seen since Connery. This is actually one of the faults of the film, Bond is so superhuman there is a lack of tension. Only in the stimulator scene is he in trouble. Michael Lonsdale is a fine supersmooth supervillan and Louis Chiles is a better actor than Barbara Bach. Maybe bringing back Richard Kei was a mistake but he was so popular, so why not ?
Some of M had been seen before, the boat chase in venice - TMWTGG, the speedboat chase - LALD, the climatic shootout -TSWLM. However M did these things bigger. Cubby Brocoli promised to put every penny on the screen, and he did. The action highlights being the PTS, the museum fight and the speedboat chase. Bond even has time to actually do some spying, shoot men out of trees and swim with a giant python. Oh and also bed three women and save the world. There were loads of gadgets and humour, some good, some not so good.
People say M was good until it went into space. I personally liked the space scenes. The effects at the time were impressive and M was nominated for a 'special effects' oscar.
At the end of the day M is way over the top and outlandish. But it's also great entertainment.
9/10

Often criticized as a weak Bond film by people who don't enjoy life, this was Roger Moore's most lavish entry. (If not the entire series'!)
Cubby really put all the money up on the screen for this one, with nearly every scene featuring a new location or giant set. Ken Adam obviously decided to end his Bond tenure by pulling out all the stops. Some great locales here as well, including Iguazu Falls- most recently seen in Indiana Jones 4.
Sure, it maybe has a little too much fun, but what can you expect from a film that sends 007 to both Rio and outer space? I'd argue that this is a classic Bond film, if only because it perfectly illustrates how grand the Bond series- at its peak- could really be.
10/10

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

10/10 for me as well. The second half reminds me of Star Wars.

9/10. When I was younger, I thought Moonraker was a bit over the top. But as Harry said it looks better very year. It has a great cast. And it has Ken Adam, John Barry and Stanley Kubrick helping out so it looks and sounds wonderful.

Moonraker was a popular whipping-boy for the series but I think its standing has improved recently. It's almost a cult film now because it's so far out and no can deny it's well made and a BIG film. Bond films haven't seemed like BIG films for quite a while.

I love the explanation Moore provides on his commentary track:
"People have asked me, 'How do you wrestle with a giant, rubber snake and maintain a straight face?' And the answer is, 'I remember that I'm going to the bank afterwards.'" ;D

I always thought that was real snake. James Bond would'nt swim with a rubber snake, would he ? Seriously I liked that scene. The way he kills it with a poison pen. A straight forward gadget and the kind that todays films could use.
