The mid 80's was when society in general became very age and health consious. Other action actors such as Willis and Stallone were also much younger. Moore did look good for his age, but too old play Bond. However good he looked he was known to be far too old, 20 odd years older than the character created by Fleming & nearly 16 years older than when Connery made DAF. After the negative reviews of AVTAK, a change was probably needed. Young or old, seven films is a lot.
Having Moore play an older Bond is a radical reboot. Almost as radical as having a rookie Bond. If they they did go down this route the action may have to be different. Less fist fights ,physical stunts and older women. Cubby Brocoli obviously did'nt want Bond to go in this direction.

I don't think EON is ever going to take that direction. Frankly I wish that the McClory film had settled into the aged Bond. They make a couple of comments on that, but just like Crystal Skull they never really embrace it. All they say is "he's old" then at the end "oh I'm retiring". Quite an old fart that Bond. Look at Rocky Balboa, Stallone used that premise and nailed it. How about seeing an old Bond executed in a manner? Just imagine: Bond's career almost looks to be the end after a huge f**k up occurs during his last mission, which wasn't really his fault, but everyone suspects it's his. Everyone doubts him, thinks he's going to become a full blown alcoholic when he's got nothing left in his life to look forward to once his 00 rank is revoked. But Bond knows he's still got it, or at least what's left of it and will do whatever it takes to prove it. He's assigned one last mission, an easy looking job, but as like many Fleming plots, it just happens to be a bigger case. Bond meets a dame during the mission, decides to stick with her in the end so he's got something to look forward to after retirement. M realizes Bond is still reliable and wants to keep him, but like Connery in real life, Bond becomes way too relaxed in retirement. Cue crappy title song with Connery winking at the camera. Okay, scrap the last sentence and you've got a good premise to go with.

I wasn't thinking about the permanent change of direction, transition to older Bond for good. Rather about the more visible acknowledgement of Bond's age in this particular film (whose script gives such an opportunity) in order to make it more memorable and significant swansong for the longest serving (and for some the best) Bond actor. Then with Dalton's debut we would have had the return to the normal direction.

I'm glad I'm not Eon now. Another QoS might tank the series for a while.

How about a script or story for the next one? It would make a change.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

I think it's time for EON to stop making more Bonds.

They'll have to drop the Bourne thing next time because it'll be passe by then. Not sure what they'll come up with.

There is likely to be another Bourne film sooner or later so Eon might wait to have a look at that.

They could start copying the latest Batman movies.

They could start copying the latest Batman movies. Batman Begins was an inspiration for the reboot although obviously much more of a prequel than Eon went for ultimately.
