James Bond is back - with a new adventure being penned by best-selling thriller writer Jeffery Deaver.
The novel, which has been mysteriously dubbed Project X for now, will be published a year in one year's time, marking Bond creator Ian Fleming's birthday.
Deaver, who has been hailed as "the master of ticking-bomb suspense", has been selected to breathe fresh life into the super-spy by Ian Fleming Publications Ltd.
The American author, a Bond fan since childhood, has written 26 novels and sold more than 20 million books worldwide.
He has started work on the book and its real title will be revealed at a later date.
Deaver said: "I can't describe the thrill I felt when first approached by Ian Fleming's estate to ask if I'd be interested in writing the next book in the James Bond series.
"I began reading them when I was about nine or 10, ignorant of the Cold War politics they explored but enthralled by their sense of adventure and derring-do. I continued to read and re-read them, which was fortunate because as a teen and adult I found, of course, nuances, that were invisible to a child."
Deaver continued: "The Bond books were important parts of my life.... They appealed to me as wonderful stories but they also stood as singular examples of a thriller writer's craft.
"I learned, through osmosis as well as design, much technique from Mr Fleming's work: compactness, attention to detail, heroic though flawed characters, fast-pacing, concrete imagery and straightforward prose."
Born near Chicago, Deaver is best known for his Kathryn Dance and Lincoln Rhyme books, notably The Bone Collector, which was turned into a film starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

Will the novel takes place in the '60s or the modern day?

Will the novel takes place in the '60s or the modern day? I'd like to see a modern day Bond novel rather than a 60s set one. I'd imagine this one will be set in the same time as the Faulks one.

The report at the Globe and Mail states that the Deaver novel will be set in the present. www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/bond-james-bond-is-back-for-more/article1583388/His Bond book, to be set in the present day, will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in Britain and Simon & Schuster in the United States. More than 100 million James Bond books have been sold around the world.I think this is good news. Deaver is a fine thriller writer and it will be interesting to see what he does with Bond. I particularly like it that he said he will stick to Fleming's characterization but will write the novel in his own essence. Let's hope they all stick to this idea. I think it's crazy that the writer has to write completely in the style of Fleming. Fleming is Fleming and whoever takes over has his own style.

caribbeanjack.....have you read any Bond novels from Raymond Benson? I read his first one. Man, I can't even remember the title now. It's been so many years. That's right, Raymond Benson also took a turn at the novels. Oh, it's Zero Minus Ten, I think, that first novel. After that I skipped all the others. I may have a novelization for one of the Brosnan films somewhere in the house; I think Benson did those too. But I never got around to reading it.

I'm glad it will be a modern day one. There has been no contemporary Bond novel since 2002 and a modern day set one will be interesting.
I looked at Raymond Benson's wiki and it says he "resigned from writing Bond novels" in 2003. I thought that the owners of the novels decided to stop producing them for a while.
How about a book of Bond short stories written by famous authors?

BTW how would you rate the Bond novels you read from Benson?

I remember it was fairly close to the film. Zero Minus Ten also felt "film-like." I guess Benson did what he could with the books, he's a serious Bond "historian" and probably had other ideas but he was most likely conforming to the direction that the publication side (Ian Fleming Centre?) of Bondom was pursuing at that time. I think they were trying to reach a bigger audience, so they made the books more of a film with lots of action and gadgets, and the prose was simple.

The backdrop was realistic. That's the one that concerned the hand-over of Hong Kong to China. The plot itself, if I remember correctly, was a bit complicated. The Bond character was basically a continuation of the one in the Fleming books but of course living in our present time. So in that sense it's unrealistic. That Bond character would have to be a very old man in our time. I remember reading an interview with Benson and he mentioned something about hoping to talk to Glidrose one day and setting the timeline as a period piece. So it sounds like he knew as well that the approach to the character was unrealistic. But he did what he could with those books given the parameters he had to work with.

Hello, I must admit...I am extremely excited about Jeffrey Deaver writing a James Bond book! He's been a Bond fan since childhood, and over 20 million books sales worldwide speaks very well of the man's credentials. I have a feeling it'll be a hit! I was lucky enough to recently get a great deal on a hardcover copy of Sebastian Faulk's 'Devil May Care'...but have yet to read it because I've been reading all Ian Fleming's Bond books over the last while. MGM may be in a huge financial mess, Bond 23 is delayed...but Thank God the literary James Bond 007 is alive and well! Take Care!

Deaver was on BBC Radio yesterday and said his Bond would be young and in the present day. He said he imagined Bond to look like Hoagy Carmichael because that's what Fleming said once.
