Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

I would pay good money to see you hired as a film critic by a national newspaper.

I saw it in the theatres and once on dvd. Not a fun movie to revisit. Especially when I remember this guy is supposed to be Bond and this rubbish is supposed to be a Bond story, it is the MacGruber version of a Bond movie.

Saw some of it on television a few months ago again. It doesn't seem like a big film, certainly in contrast to the Bond films of the sixties and seventies.

I saw it in the theatres and once on dvd. Not a fun movie to revisit. Especially when I remember this guy is supposed to be Bond and this rubbish is supposed to be a Bond story, it is the MacGruber version of a Bond movie. Same here. I rewatched in a vain attempt to find something good about it. The only good thing remained Caterina Murino as Bond girl. Which lasted what, two total minutes of screentime? And the first time I saw it in empty theater as I have a friend who owns cinemas, thus I also saw it WAY before it was released in Italy. I thought it was dreadful the first time around, and the second time worsened the impression. Nothing like Bond and boring as hell. My dad, who is the one who introduced me to Bond movies together with my mom, FELL ASLEEP while watching Casino Royale. His comment "this didn't look like a Bond movie AT ALL. I've never seen anything Bond-related that is so boring. And, that dude is supposed to be Bond? He's ugly, he's blond and he looks like a Bond villain. I was convinced HE WAS the villain the first time they showed him." (I'm serious, my dad isn't exposed to movie gossip and news, so he had NO idea what Craig looked like until he saw Casino Royale on satellite TV here. I told him to watch because I wanted his impression). My mom flat-out refused to watch. And the best part was, while she is MUCH more informed than my dad on movies and TV, thus knew about Craig, the first time his photo appeared on the newspaper here, she went "What is Putin doing in the TV page of the newspaper!". She seriously thought it was Putin. LOL. Me "Mom, that's Daniel Craig." Mom "He totally looks like Putin! I swear I thought it was him. HOW did they pick such a guy to play Bond? I want Pierce Brosnan back!!".

I have watched it several times - mainly out of curiosity when it is on television. It's bland, merely an average action film starring Daniel Craig who is for some strange reason playing a rookie Bond on an early mission.
I presume Casino Royale is still regarded as a great film? It is interesting that all those Bond fans who loved Craig in CR loved Quantum of Solace on their first viewing, but most had to admit it was a poor effort after subsequent viewings.

I will always have the utmost respect for Tullio Kezich, a now deceased (he died a couple of years ago), extremely famous movie critic in Italy, one of the highest regarded movie critics ever of the country. He slammed down Casino Royale like nobody's business. And started his piece saying his word probably wouldn't have mattered as much as all those Variety estatic critics.. and that he sent a solidarity greeting to his colleague at the Independent who slammed down the movie like he was about to do in his story, and that only another two critics had doubts. That critique was so spot-on. It was a full page on Corriere della Sera, Italy's biggest and most prestigious newspaper. For once I was proud of our movie critics ;D What would I have given for him to critique QoS too! Considering how he slammed down CR, he would have totally butchered QoS. Following is a translation of the main points of his critique. I can't find the original article but I remember he said Craig had way too little expressions and he had to stop pouting LOL Basically the complaints all of us have. I don't think there's any other critic who has been SO damn spot-on on Casino Royale and Craig's Bond. And this is a guy who clearly knows his stuff very well when Bond is concerned.. a true Bond fan.

I agree with him too that Ian Fleming would not have been very impressed with Daniel Craig playing his great fictional creation. I don't imagine that Fleming had a Daniel Craig type in mind when he was writing the books. Bond was supposed to be Fleming's fantasy version of himself and he had actors like David Niven and Richard Burton in mind to play him.

Agreed, Gambit. And, his first choice was my beloved!! Cary Grant. With that in mind how the HELL do they even manage to think about casting someone like Craig? SERIOUSLY! AND, a movie like Casino Royale with Bond behaving that way and looking that way. Even worse with QoS. I don't even know how the critics managed to praise CR so much. It's the most boring Bond movie EVER.

The ironic thing thing is that there is now an entire generation who probably think Bond is supposed to be some bad tempered little bloke always covered in dust and smashing through glass like The Incredible Hulk.

LMAO! Spot-on. Except I should cry instead of laugh. It is true though, your description covers it perfectly. That's just sad... and the exact opposite of what Bond is. Well if he (as is most likely) only does three movies tops, things will get back on track. NO way the next one looks anything like Craig, they'll get back to much more traditional actor and movie. That's actually my fear for Bond 23 with Craig, because much as they try, they cannot achieve that at all as long as he is Bond. But, once the new actor is settled in, and hopefully it will be Cavill or anyway someone like him, we should finally be able to enjoy an actual James Bond on screen again.
