I keep reading that Daniel Craig rescued the James Bond franchise. I don't agree - it did not need rescuing! Does anyone else think that the series was dead in the water after Die Another Day? I don't. And Die Another Day got positive reviews on the forums and by the James Bond fan establishment when it came out. I remember! All this "Craig rescued Bond" talk is probably the result of some journalist having to cobble together a piece on Daniel Craig and James Bond. Maybe some people think that the new direction in Casino Royale reinvigorated the series in the same way that The Spy Who Loved Me did. But, I think Casino Royale ruined the series because it was so unlike a Bond film whereas The Spy Who Loved Me celebrated the cinematic Bond.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

Craig did not rescue Bond. He brought evil and corruption to the world.

Previous Bond actors may have saved the franchise.
A bald, de motivated and old looking Connery clearly could'nt have continued throughout the 70's. So a motivated and youthful looking Moore kept the franchise going. Some of his films even managed to outgross all of Connery's.
People then said Dalton had saved the franchise. Moore had got too old and his lavish, spectacular fantasies were perhaps more suited to the 70's. A younger more serious Bond was needed.
The low box office for LTK, the 6 year gap afterwards & Daltons resignation had some people writing off the franchise. Brosnan swooped in to save it & GE became the biggest grossing Bond ever. Fast forward to 2004 and I can't see how the franchise needed saving. Brosnan's four films had done great box office, got good reviews. Bond fans throughout the world loved him as Bond. DAD had it's faults but also some plus points. Everyone was looking forward to Brosnan's fifth & sixth being better and cementing Brosnan as up there with Connery. Seems to me that there was nothing that needed saving.

Lazenby didn't save the franchise.

The series was in very good health, so Daniel Craig did not save it. He may have killed off the old series with all the changes.
It was impossible for Lazenby or anyone to succeed Connery.

Lazenby almost killed the series, but that was my guess.

I liked Daniel Craig as Bond, but he did not save the franchise as it was still wildly popular. I feel that whatever they did and whoever they cast it would have been a hit. It was a miracle that they managed to replace Sean Connery as it must have seemed like he was so identified with Bond that no one else could play him.
