Whether an actor is in his 30's or 50's I dought if anyone will play the same character in more than 6 films. Michael Keaton had the option of starring in several Batman films, but walked away after two. Christopher Reeve was the perfect Superman in many peoples eyes, but he only made four. Bruce Willis became popular as John Mcclane but had to be begged to star in a fourth. And that was after a 14 year gap. Arnie made his fortune as 'The Terminator' over a 20 year period, but will never make a forth. Only Stallone starred as Rocky in six films over a 30 year period & has sworn not to make anymore. Actors become bored playing the same character, being asked the same questions in interviews and being type cast. Just like you and me would get bored doing the same job for 20 years.
This is espescially true playing Bond. Everything about how you look, what you wear, say and do is scrutinised 24/7. Your private life is gone. Unlike the above actors, your usually churning out Bond films in quick succession, not every ten years, and have not got much time to do other things. If you make other films which portray you as a dashing hero, people say you are not versatile. If you play against type, box office takings may be poor and people will complain. You need a lot of stamina to be Bond for over a decade. Moore managed 12 years but most people think that was two years too long. The public will also get bored of the same actor playing the same character for too long and will know if the actor is going through the motions, picking up big pay cheques.

If Pierce had become Bond in 87. I suspect he would have been happy to quit in 2002 after DAD. That would have been 6 films with a nice six year gap between LTK & G. He would have been Bond for 15 years. But between 1990 - 1994 the public were'nt paying much attention to Bond.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

Whether an actor is in his 30's or 50's I dought if anyone will play the same character in more than 6 films. This is especially true since the role of Bond brings so much baggage with it. Ironically, Brosnan was the first 007 who was eager to stay after his contract had ended. I also think he was probably our last chance for another true "Bond era" of five or more films. As you mentioned, there are a number of factors today that work against such a lengthy tenure. The audiences (and actors) are more fickle, while the time, commitment, and promotion are far more extensive. One reason I wasn't eager to see Clive Owen take over is because I didn't think he would stick around very long. I don't believe Craig will either. Both seem to regard the role as being beneath them somehow.

The difference being that Craig needed the money and exposure more than Owen.

Why do people keep putting down the Brosnon bond movies, i think they were great, no one nocked them when they came out, i look at Craig trying to be bond and just cringe!

Screw EON productions...it's their loss, not Mr. Brosnan's. EON screws up Pierce's Bonds. EON fires Pierce and hires DC, leaving him w/out a good Bond movie (with the exception of GE). Pierce gets bashed for being responsible for the 3 Bonds after GE. And EON's trying to get away with it. This is why DC's Bonds should be boycotted. Hello, You know what? FormerBondFan is not TOTALLY out of line by asking for "Quantum Of Solace" to be boycotted. By buying "Casino Royale" on DVD, and by planning to see "Quantum Of Solace" November 7th, I am basically telling Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson that firing Pierce Brosnan was okay, and made the franchise better. If people on this site were not so looking forward to my review of the new Bond, I might just join FormerBondFan and say 'screw you EON'!!! Take Care!

Last night my feelings on the new direction and the new bond was confirmed, i decieded for some strange reason to view "casino royale" again, trying to get a taste of bond, and by the end i now no the daniel craig is the worst actor to play james bond, god i thought this guy is so ugly and made me cring all the way threw, then i put on "goldeneye" and what a difference, pierce looked great, just the part for bond, how handsome and suave he looked and a much better film, that only shows that "casino royale" is a load of crap. This is way i think that B.Brocoli is totally demented to fire pierce.

I'm sure lots of people who are not a fan of Craig's Bond will watch QOS on DVD, mainly due to apathy rather than any sort of protest! I'll probably watch it so I can comment. Alec, as you are in Canada and I'm am in England, I will be able to see QOS a week before you. I'll sneak a video camera into the cinema and put it on bittorrent for you. (only joking if Eon, Trading Standards or the police are reading this!).

Actually...they should be bribing all of us on this site to be nice to their new Bond flick, and poor ol' 'Danny boy'! Take Care! P.S. I'm hoping to start work on a new article for 'Alternative 007' this weekend. It's called 'The Mystery Of George Lazenby'.
