I don't think it would count as a spoiler given that it was cut out, so here we go. At the end of QOS it was to originally end with Mr. White waiting at Bond's apartment to kill him. The ending would have Bond left for dead as the cliffhanger, similar to From Russia with Love's cliffhanger ending with Bond being poisoned. However EON and Forster decided to cut it out to leave Bond 23 free to do anything they wanted.  My question is: Should Fleming's "Bond dies" cliffhanger be used in a future Bond flick? |

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)

My question is: Should Fleming's "Bond dies" cliffhanger be used in a future Bond flick? Prior to QOS, I would've said 'maybe'. But now I'm not so sure that EON- or at least, the current version of EON- should try to do cliffhangers. They're too concerned about what everyone else is doing for that type of long-term approach. Of course, the other problem is that Bond dying really isn't much of a cliffhanger...because you know they'd still end the film with "James Bond Will Return". And unlike when Fleming wrote the novel, the audience knows that James Bond isn't really going to die anyway. |

Fleming and Doyle did it to give them the chance of genuinely ending the character. As Poirot says, the cinematic Bond is a bit too valuable to be tossed away: many people would love to get their mitts on the series.
It could be done to create a stir, probably in conjunction with Craig's departure from the series. Like Holmes and Bobby Ewing, a dead Bond can always return....

Well, ending the film with a cliffhanger and then having to wait two or three years to see what happens seems strange. When filming begins on the next Bond, we'll know who is signed up for it and then know that Bond survived.
Films with sequels or trilogies don't usually end with cliffhangers. They usually end with a certain part of the story tied up.
I see the big trilogy idea for the new re booted Bond was quietly shelved. No reason given.

How about this as an alternate ending for QOS: Q (John Cleese) wakes up and realises CR and QOs was a dream. He answers the phone, and we switch to the person calling him who is.....the real James Bond , i.e not played by Daniel Craig.  |
