DANIEL CRAIG - CRAIG: 'AUSTIN POWERS RUINED BOND' www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/craig%20austin%20powers%20ruined%20bond_1090985DANIEL CRAIG is convinced BOND bosses were forced to take the 007 franchise in a different direction because MIKE MYERS' AUSTIN POWERS films ruined the spy genre. The last two Bond movies, 2006's Casino Royale and last year's (08) Quantum of Solace, both starring Craig, have taken on a darker, less light-hearted tone than their predecessors. And the British actor is adamant future 007 films will not return to the catchphrases and gags that were a staple of previous Bond incarnations. Craig blames Myers' Austin Powers trilogy, which poked fun at all things Bond, for the change. He says, "Don't get me wrong, I'm up for (gags), as long as the gag works. But the problem is that Austin Powers screwed everything up. He exploded the genre." This article includes probably the worst ever picture taken of Daniel Craig!! - (Edit- Contact music do not like hotlinking, so you will have to click on the article link).

He does look a bit old in that photo. I don't really see how Austin Powers has anything to do with the Bond series. Austin Powers was spoofing the YOLT type of Bond film and they haven't made one like that for many years.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

If there's anyone who has ruined Bond, that's EON.

The first Austin Powers was made in the 90's. They made a couple of Brosnan films after that which were popular. These included gags, gadgets and one liners from Brosnan.
Austin Powers was sending up the OTT Connery and Moore films. M being the last OTT entry, 30 years ago. The franchise did'nt have to go all serious just because of Austin Powers. The Bond machine is much too big to let a couple spoof films influence how the seris should go.

The first AP released in 1997, the same year TND was released.

We have to keep in mind that Daniel Craig represents the masterpiece theater version of the Bond series. It's not going to be everyone's taste but then you have Austin Powers which is like Saturday Night Live and is geared for a wide audience. So naturally a film like Austin Powers will take some of the spotlight off Bond. That's why we now have Daniel Craig because he's slowly making people turn away from all spy films and all action films and go back to the Bond series. He's an incredible actor. At first I saw him like the Elvis of the series, a great phenomenon, but now I'm seeing him more like Obama, an even bigger sensation. Sometimes it just blows me away to realize we're living in a time that has two men who are probably the closest we have to Greek mythological characters like Odysseus--one is in politics and the leader of the free world, and the other is the greatest living actor. My best friend Ron told me the either day that this is a moment we will be telling our grand kids some day and it's all a humbling experience.

It's incredible to share this era with Daniel Craig. Sometimes I think it's all a dream.
