I've always felt that if Moore had been allowed to play an older 007, it could've been a very classy swansong for him. Ironically, the script already had plenty of elements which suited this approach. The mission itself was a more laid-back affair (ie. horse racing; old-fashioned espionage; etc.), and the threat pitted Bond against youth and technology (ie. eugenics and microchips). Great observations too. I think it would have made the film even better if the script had focused more on the mental aspect of such a situation to Bond, on his psyche. Something in the mood: "I'm getting to old for this stuff" Perhaps the reason why it didn't do so is that the producers weren't sure whether it was going to be Moore's last film or not. As we know, beginning with MR, Sir Roger was constantly announcing that he quits the role after each new film.

Perhaps CR is the silliest Bond movie ever. I mean Daniel Craig as a ladykiller Bond, how silly is that ?. A Bond origin story eh. Killing two men in the PTS does'nt make an origin story. Superman, Batman begins, even Spiderman. Now they are origin stories. Dame Judi Dench being in the film. Bond suddenly falling in love and talking about his little finger, then showing no emotion when Vesper dies. Tight swimming trunks and blatant product advertising. I could go on.

I think that they were worried that the series would struggle after Roger Moore left so they kept inviting him back.

It's a shame about the orginin story as they can't do one in the future now.
