Hello Everyone! The last Batpoll for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy is here.
As with Batman Begins, we know there is going to be a sequel based on the end of The Dark Knight where the Gotham's Finest goes on a run as he takes on Harvey Dent's crimes.
Considering The Dark Knight received overwhelmingly great reviews from both critics and moviegoers as well as broke box office records, Christopher Nolan knew it will be hard to top this Batfilm, especially with Heath Ledger's Oscar winning performance as The Joker. Furthermore, many of second sequels do not do very well. Some of these examples include Shrek The Third and Spider-Man 3. Nevertheless, Nolan was determined to finish the Bruce Wayne story arc he started with Batman Begins but feared it would be redundant halfway during the filming, and he knew the second sequel had to either top or match the greatness of its predecessor.
Because of Heath Ledger's death, one would say The Dark Knight Rises is a complete rewrite since Chris Nolan originally intended for The Joker to return. Out of respect for Ledger, Nolan decided to choose a different adversary. Speaking of the villain in Rises, a lot of people assumed it would be The Riddler, and there were rumors that Johnny Depp will play the part. The studio wanted The Riddler since he was similar to The Joker, who plays with the minds of his victims. Nolan, on the hand, chose Bane, an opponent who challenges Batman mentally and physically. This came into question, considering how would a venom-induced Batvillain will fit into Chris Nolan's realistic environment of Batman. There you have it.
Like The Dark Knight, the final installment of Nolan's Battrilogy was heavily promoted, especially with its 6 minute prologue shown in IMAX 7 months before release. Due to its hype as well as being the Bat's final battle, moviegoers expected the final Batfilm to dominate the US box office of 2012 if not worldwide.
As July 2012 approached, midnight showing tickets were sold out very fast, especially in IMAX, even before moviegoers could pull their wallets on the first day the tickets were on sale. It's the final episode of Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy. What can you expect? The same can be said with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
How does The Dark Knight Rises rank with its predecessors? Some expected to be the weakest of the trilogy mostly due to the large amount of energy and effort being used in making The Dark Knight. As the reviews came in, opinions were divided. Some said that even though it's not on the same level as The Dark Knight, Rises ended the trilogy at a very high note. Other said it's the best and the darkest of the trilogy. Overall, it's an epic masterpiece.
Once again, a tragedy was associated with the cinematic world of the Caped Crusader. We lost Heath Ledger to drug overdose 6 months before The Dark Knight released. Then one night in Aurora, Colorado 4 years later, a gunman named James Holmes (who called himself The Joker) committed a horrendous act by gunning downing the audience, killing 12 and injuring 58 others, as they watched Batfinale. Warner Bros. was saddened by the incident and announced the cancellation of the Paris, Mexico, and Japan premieres of Rises. Several broadcast networks suspended TV ads of the film. Also, Gangster Squad was pushed back from September 2012 to January 2013 due to the scene where gangsters shooting audience though the back of movie screen. The cast and crew of Rises offered their condolences to the victims, with Christian Bale making his personal visit to the survivors of the tragedy.
The Dark Knight Rises opened in the US with $160 million, which is $37 - $40 million less than what Warner Bros. had expected. This might explained the shooting incident. Currently, its worldwide gross is at $1,081,041,287 (2nd behind The Avenger's $1,511,757,910) with $448,139,099 in the US and $632,902,188 in the overseas. First time since Batman & Robin, a Batfilm's international gross surpasses those in the US. Rises' US gross is less compare to its predecessor's $533,345,358 ($534,858,444 if you include the rerelease last July), not to mentioned The Avengers' $623,357,910. This is either due to the Batman VS The Joker story in The Dark Knight or the tragedy in Colorado or perhaps both. Still, Rises's gross is higher its predecessor's worldwide gross of $1,004,558,444 (which includes the rerelease last July).
Unlike Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises is the only one in the trilogy that is not nominated by the Academy Awards. It did not even received any attention from the Golden Globes, but it did, however, receive a single nomination from the BAFTAs, which is less compared to Begins and Dark Knight. I guess the shooting might have done some damage. Anyway, enough with this doom and gloom incident.
What can I say about the Batfinale? A lot of people would consider The Dark Knight to best of the Batfilms. Personally, I would say The Dark Knight Rises. The thing about this finale is it really plays with your emotions, especially with Bruce Wayne's situation of having taking the blame for Harvey Dent's death for 8 years as well as losing the woman (Rachel Dawes) he loved.
Despite being dark and realistic, it's still a fun, escapist entertainment along with the rest of the trilogy, and like Begins and Dark Knight, it does have the ingredients of what you would see in the Classic James Bond films. Gadgets, nice cars, Q-like character in Morgan Freeman, Bond-like character in Christian Bale, etc. If I must say, Rises is the most Bondian out of the trilogy and has surpassed its predecessor as the best James Bond movie in years. Hell, it's more of a James Bond movie compared to any of DC's Bond films, not to mentioned Christian Bale looking a million miles more like James Bond than DC himself is or will ever be.
Ironically though, Rises receives no Oscar nominations, not even in technical category, while Skyfall got 5 (all of non-majors). This should tell you how STUPID the Oscars really are these days not because talents like Chris Nolan don't get the recognition he deserves but because the Academy is willing to give nominations to arrogant and pretentious monsters and/or their works. And Barbara Broccoli is one of these monsters. She did not get the nomination, but her subjects did. It seems like a good thing that Chris's Batfinale did not get any as the Oscars are now a COMPLETE JOKE!
Now that Batman has done his job saving the world in the big screen (for now until his 2nd reboot, which I rather watch than any of the corrupted Bond films starring DC as Bond), Superman will take his place this coming June (in the same fashion as Batman Begins).
In the meantime, do yourself a favor and rate this epic masterpiece finale.
