This really was the film where gadgets and stunts took over from reality. I mean space ships being eaten, 'Little Nellie' and villans hiding out inside volcanoes. However it's all very impressive and entertaining. I love both the outlandish and the grittier Bonds. YOLT I enjoyed. This was Connery's fifth Bond movie of the 60's and he was starting to feel the pace. Looking older, less lean and not as interested. He was to later speak about the unbearable press intrusion while filming in Japan. He obviously wanted out and quit (for the first time). 8/10.

Like Adam says, Connery had had enough by the end of this one. I think he said the final straw was being followed into the toilet by Japanese journalists.

The pressure for Connery as Bond in the 60's must have been intense. And I think he did not want to be typecast and wished to do some other things. A great movie, and an iconic ending.

Eight/Ten for me. A Connery Bond movie does not deserve to be under eight.

Goldfinger created the blueprint for the Bond formula, but YOLT was also a highly significant turning point for the series. As adam noted, this is where they realized the series could merely be "loosely based" on the novels.
It's also similar to Goldfinger in that it gave us some of the most iconic Bond film imagery. Mike Myers alone owes a huge debt to this one film for his Austin Powers franchise.
I find that all the classic Bonds seem to get better each year, and this is no exception. Now more than ever, I really enjoy seeing 007 in Japan.
