It looks like the 1980's was not a good time for Bond movies.

Bond during the eighties did have a rough time-Not only was the feeling that Moore was past it, the rise of "Indiana Jones", Bttf 1,2,3, the Lethal weapon movies, Die Hard 1, and 2. A feeling of "tiredness" throughout the Bond series saw to that.

There is an valid argument that Moore should have retired after M. He had reached 50 and with the 80's coming, up maybe it was time for a change. Cubby Brocoli perhaps thought so and screen tested James Brolin. Whether Brolin was a big enough actor and personality to transform the franchise, we'll never know. I also read Dalton turned down FYEO. On the other hand M had smashed the box office of TSWLM & Moore was a popular Bond.
Into the 80's we went with Moore still Bond. FYEO & O were solid & popular Bonds. Moore was still motivated and continued to embrace the constant media attention. Moore's biogragphy states he had decided O would be his last Bond. Until Cubby Brocoli rang him asking him to star in AVTAK. Which most of us agree was a mistake.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

Which most of us agree was a mistake. Even Moore disliked AVTAK.

Not sure Dalton or Brosnan could have saved AVTAK. But loved Chris Walken in it.

After AFTAK, we got a semi-reboot The Living Daylights, which made Bond younger.
