Just saw a Speilberg T.V. interview. He said he approached Cubby Brocoli twice in the late 70's asking to direct a Bond movie. Cubby Brocoli turned him down on both occasions. Cubby Brocoli probably wanted to stay loyal to his current crew and give 2nd Unit Director John Glen a chance.
At the time, Speilberg was famous for 'Duel', 'Jaws' and 'Close Encounters'. His only action/comedy film was '1941' which flopped in 1979. George Lucas then approched Speilberg to direct 'Raiders' in 1981.
Would Speilberg have wanted Moore as Bond, or want a younger actor. Harrison Ford was only 42 when he made 'Raiders'. Would it have been better than M, FYEO or O ?
A word to BB & MJW, I bet Speilberg would still love to direct a Bond movie.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

I think Cubby would have pulled all the shots so Spielberg would have had no say over the actor and the other bits. I think Spielberg would be a bit frustrated by the Eon film-making process and would have wanted more power. Or perhaps he could have had more power. Did the Bond directors before around 1983 have more power over the direction of the film than they have now? Maybe it would have been good if Spielberg could have directed Never Say Never Again with a bigger budget. Would he have done that if asked?

In Roger's book he suggests financial restraints on who they hire meant that Spielberg, who was big news after Jaws, was a non-starter because he'd cost more money than their usual people. At least we got Raiders of the Lost Ark on the rebound.
