By Amy Nelmes You would think telly action man Rupert Penry-Jones had done the lot... He's been blown to bits in Spooks, gone to hell and back in The 39 Steps and tomorrow night will be hunting down a mad killer in the gory new ITV drama Whitechapel. But like most hunky young actors Rupert, 38, dreams of being the ultimate action man- BOND. Although the current 007 star Daniel Craig, 40, is nowhere near MI6 pensionable age, fresh-faced Rupert would love to step into his shoes. Rupert's name was mentioned when previous Bond Pierce Brosnan quit the part and he says: "Maybe at the moment I don't look old enough but perhaps I'll get a shot at it when Daniel Craig moves on from the role. "For a lot of actors, myself included, it's a dream part."

I could think of worse choices but he wouldn't be at the top of my shortlist.

If he's 38 now, he will well into his 40's by the time DC stops. So too old as far as BB & MJW are concerned. Never seen him in any big screen films, so don't know if he could carry a Bond film. Looks a bit mummies boyish as well.
I'm sure BB will suss out public/fan opinion & internet polls before deciding on the next Bond. They won't want the massive controversy that surrounded DC's appointment again. They won't want to constantly have to defend and 'big up' their Bond actor. If that will mean paying more for a bigger name, I'm sure they will do it.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

EON should quit making Bond movies altogether.

He could have been hired a few years ago as a younger unknown. But he is a bit too old now and has not moved out of UK TV work.
He would be an ok choice IMO.

As others have pointed out he'll be well into his forties by the time the role is recast again and someone like Henry Cavill is waiting in the wings anyway.

I find Penry-Jones a bit on the dull side to be honest.

I don't remember Daniel Craig begging for the role. Apparently he turned it down a number of times.

It must have been a tough decision for him. Shall I play Bond or carry on acting in BBC1's 'Archangle' ? !
That was probably part of the bigging up of DC. Claiming he turned down the role. It makes it seem like BB & MJW were desperate to get him because he's so good & was better than anyone else available. It also makes it seem like DC was a big star & great actor who did'nt need the Bond role.

It also makes it seem like DC was a big star & great actor who did'nt need the Bond role. What I meant to say is that I can't remember Craig being linked to Bond before 2005. 99% of vaguely suitable actors are linked to Bond and questioned about it. Some lesser known actors such as Penry-Jones and Nigel Harmon state publicly that they would like to take on the role. But Craig did not say in 2002: "I would love to play James Bond". He may have turned it down when asked by Broccoli. I think that Broccoli got him to agree to the part much earlier than spring 2005. As you said adam, Craig probably had a choice between James Bond or guest appearing in the Xmas special of Midsommer Murders. As for Archangel, here is an interesting link form a newsgroup from 2005: groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.media.tv.misc/browse_thread/thread/aa34edad9606ac62/ec72d7c7b7b2c5e1?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=archangel#ec72d7c7b7b2c5e1

Thanks for the article Cpt.
Craig was never talked about as a potential Bond either in the media or fan sites prior to 2005. That's probably why he never discussed being Bond, he was never asked about it !
It irritates me when I see DC saying he turned down the role and only accepted the part after he read the script. It's as if he was saying a Dalton/Brosnan type Bond movie was'nt good enough for him. DC knew that becoming Bond would give him instant fame & fortune. It would also give him more acting choice and chances to work with better directors.
Nigel Harmon, was'nt he in Eastenders ? Can't see him becoming Bond. People like Penry-Jones probably say they want to be Bond to try and get themselves in the media and catch BB's eye.

Penry-Jones is at least more Bondian looking than Daniel Craig. I doubt he'll be Bond now though.
