Casino Royale was a radical departure for the Bond franchise. It had an actor who did not look like Bond playing a different Bond character. The movie was distinctive because it was an origin story. Casino Royale was a hit. This "young Bond" film with James Bond played by Daniel Craig was seen as fresh and a change from the usual Bond (although not by me).
Eon tried to replicate this new winning formula in Quantum of Solace. In Solace, Craig was still playing the dour, inexperienced tough Bond, and the film was dark and missing many Bond motifs. This time round, critics panned the film and called for the return of the traditional Bond movie and character.
I think that Daniel Craig as Bond and the new style is an idea that only lasted for one film. Audienced expected the old style Bond to return after the origin film. I also think they will want the old style Bond back too - which is not good news for Daniel Craig.

This was a recurring theme in the reviews for QOS. I think most people enjoyed the change of pace that CR represented, but not enough to see an entire series based upon those differences. There's a reason the Bond brand has endured this long, and it's not because the idea of someone playing a secret agent is a unique one.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

James Bond is dead. That's for sure.

Gritty Bond is a bit of a one-trick pony. It's refreshing to do it now and again but you can't really sustain it for too long because it makes the series look generic.

It's refreshing to do it now and again but you can't really sustain it for too long because it makes the series look generic. Also, the audience for "gritty" generally doesn't like multiple sequels. There's already plenty of people who think the Bourne series should end at a trilogy, and don't want to see it run into the ground.

It is Brosnan who should have done a gritty Bond like he wanted.

In Solace, Craig was still playing the dour, inexperienced tough Bond... If they take a long break and come back DC will be around 43 so it would be frankly ridiculous if they try and keep this young Bond nonsense going.

Perhaps he might look to escape the clutches of Eon after the next one.

Perhaps he might look to escape the clutches of Eon after the next one. It would be interesting if he does Star Trek XIII.

Hello, Nobody could've said it better. Pulitzer Prize winning critic Roger Ebert had this to say about Daniel Craig's second outing as 007: "OK, I'll say it. Never again. Don't ever let this happen again to James Bond. "Quantum of Solace" is his 22nd film and he will survive it, but for the 23rd it is necessary to go back to the drawing board and redesign from the ground up. Please understand: James Bond is not an action hero! He is too good for that. He is an attitude. Violence for him is an annoyance. He exists for the foreplay and the cigarette.
I repeat: James Bond is not an action hero! Leave the action to your Jason Bournes. This is a swampy old world. The deeper we sink in, the more we need James Bond to stand above it."By the way...Ebert gave QOS two stars out of four. You can read his entire review at: rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081111/REVIEWS/811129989/1023Thankyou, Mr. Ebert...my sentiments exactly!!! Take Care!

The James Bond series was unique as one company made a similar type of film (the famous formula) for 40 years! But with this formula, there was room for some changes in tone. So we had Moonraker followed by For Your Eyes Only.
Craig has invented a dour Bond in a two films which are different in tone from the famous franchise. Can he make a normal Bond? I'm not sure. I don't think he would be interested, unless he really wants the money. As Gary said, the critics and cimemagoers are fed up with the new style Bond, which must annoy Eon as they wanted to spin it out over several films!
