Next is Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. According to a youtube user, here's his comment regarding this installment: For all the fanfare that Star Trek IV had received, and the momentum it created for the creation of Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek V would bring everything crashing and burning down. It was regarded as the worst film in the franchise, and is largely ignored by many fans. However it would see Jerry Goldsmith return, and he was basically the only saving grace of the film. He uses the fanfare created by Alexander Courage in a way that has never been replicated. It's bold, and in your face, and it's such a shame that Goldsmith wouldn't use this version of it again in the future films.
The score would see the return of many themes such as the main theme, but also the Klingon theme which would be altered, and sound a bit more bombastic. Goldsmith would also use a synthetic scream of a bird for the Klingon theme which added even more of a bestial quality, but still maintaining a certain level of elegance.
It's somewhat of a forgotten score even in the Trek universe since it's part of arguably the worst Star Trek movie.

8/10. It gets better with age, and any movie with the original crew is appreciated.

It's a better sequel than it gets credit for, mainly because of the flawless chemistry among the cast. This results in several memorable scenes and a nice amount of humor. (It also makes it a far more entertaining film than the dull Star Trek: The Motion Picture.)
The story was a bit disappointing, especially after the previous three entries. It felt closer to an episode of the tv series than something which really added to the film franchise.
They did lose a lot of momentum that Star Trek IV had generated, although part of the blame can be laid at Paramount's feet. Instead of rewarding the film with a better budget, they actually cut back- assuming that the goodwill of Star Trek IV would be enough to carry the box office.
It's not one I watch as often as 2, 3, 4, and 6- which all feel like one large story- but it does have its moments. Some of the scenes with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are particularly good.
My general rule with Star Trek is that bad original Trek still beats any of the other series, and this is no exception. I do prefer it to some of the workman-like Next Generation entries.
On a side note, I've always felt this movie rivals The Motion Picture for having some of the most unflattering uniforms the original crew ever wore. I still don't know how they got Shatner to agree to those baggy-looking jumpsuits.

I still don't know how they got Shatner to agree to those baggy-looking jumpsuits. I'm a big fan of the seventies beige jumpsuits. I'd love to buy one! The uniforms in the Motion Picture remind me of those in Space 1999. Kirk looked like a hairdresser in his tight white uniform in TMP! The naval style uniform introduced for the Wrath of Khan was a good move I think.

Kirk looked like a hairdresser in his tight white uniform in TMP! Now that you mention it, he absolutely did! The naval style uniform introduced for the Wrath of Khan was a good move I think. It was also a smart design choice, since it clearly differentiated the movies from the tv series. Along with the redesigned Enterprise, it had the effect of making those productions seem much bigger than they actually were. This is something they never really did with the Next Generation movies. As a result, critics often said they just felt like two-part episodes of the tv series with better special f/x.

Chekov looks like a cult leader here, and Mr Scott looks like a South American dictator!

It looks like Nimoy stayed in character no matter what camera he was in front of.

It looks like Nimoy stayed in character no matter what camera he was in front of. And Nimoy was nominated by 3 Emmys for the role of Spock.

8/10. It gets better with age, and any movie with the original crew is appreciated. Hello, I couldn't agree more with Sir Dominic. Although 'Star Trek V' is definitely not my favorite of the original crew movies...I still liked it. I truly admire William Shatner's bold vision for the film, many of his original ideas were rejected by Paramount, because they were afraid of controversy and religious backlash. For example, in the script's first drafts the Enterprise crew and Sybok do actually find Heaven and God. The end result was the 'Great Barrier', Sha-ka-ree, and an alien who was pretending to be God. Both concepts are actually very interesting. Highlights of this film for me was the segment where when Sybok releases 'the pain' from McCoy and Spock. - De Forrest Kelly was outstanding in the scene with his ill father. - Nimoy was brilliant in the 'witnessing his own birth' scene. - Shatner was wonderful when he refuses Sybok's offer and says: " I need my pain!!!" Paramount really pulled the carpet out from Shatner and his great ideas by constantly cutting back the budget...too bad Paramount won't let him go back and do a definitive 'Director's Cut'. Best line in 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier": Kirk: "Excuse me...what does God need with a starship?" 8/10 Take Care!

Some claim that "Sha Ka Ree" was an homage to Sean Connery, who was the original choice to play Sybok.

Some claim that "Sha Ka Ree" was an homage to Sean Connery, who was the original choice to play Sybok. Hello, Poirot is right. I can confirm this. The name "Sha Ka Ree" was in fact an homage to Sean Connery...who was the first choice to play the religious half-brother of Spock - Sybok. Connery, of course, was unavailable having accepted the role of Henry Jones in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"...released the very same summer. I read this little tidbit in William Shatner's book: "Captain's Log - The Making Of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." Take Care!
