Danny Dyer has beaten James Bond star Daniel Craig to the the lead role in the big screen adaptation of The Sweeney.
007 hunk Daniel was tipped to play DS George Carter in the film version of the cult 70s cop show, but cockney bad boy Danny has landed the part originally played by Dennis Waterman, The Sun reports.
Human Traffic star Danny will star opposite Ray Winstone as DI Jack Regan, the part made famous by John Thaw.
Danny and Ray played father and son in football film All In The Game in 2006 and Danny is a big admirer of Ray's work.
The film is being directed by Danny's friend and long-time collaborate Nick Love, who has worked with him on The Football Factory, The Business and The Firm.I like Danny Dyer - he is a cult figure in the Flandry household - so I will look forward to this, although it is impossible to beat Dennis Waterman and John Thaw. I wonder if Craig passed on this because of his busy schedule?

Philip Glennister - Gene Hunt in Life on Mars and Ashes To Ashes - would be fantastic as Regan.

I prefer repeats of the television series to any proposed film.

If The Sweeney was a US show Ben Stiller would have made a spoof movie version similar to Starsky and Hutch.

Craig would probably have ended up doing this if he hadn't met Barbara Broccoli in that boozy night down the pub about five years ago.
