Due to the horrendous Batman & Robin, Warner Bros. decided to shut down any plans to make Batman 5 (which was to return to the darker tone of the comics). The Batfranchise then entered a long hiatus and disappeared from the public's eye completely. After several years of no Batmovie, some people thought the Cape Crusader died, and others thought if it's worth bringing him back.
In 2003, it was announced that Batman 5 was in works. Christopher Nolan was selected as the director, and Christian Bale was cast as the Bat. Speaking of multiple actors playing the Dark Knight, I felt this was becoming too much like James Bond where multiple actors play the part of the superspy. However, I learned that Batman 5 was meant to be a reset of the series, discarding the continuity of the Burton/Schumacher films and focusing on Batman's origins. Unlike the previous Batfilms, the movie deals with realism. In a way, it's the new Batman 1 (not Batman 5), and it's like 2004's Batman animated series, which has nothing to do with the 1992 series and also focus on Bruce Wayne's early days of fighting crime.
When Batman Begins came out, it received excellent reviews from both critics and fans, and most reviews said it was even much better than Tim Burton's Batman. Both Michael Keaton and Burton himself were impressed by the reboot. The movie did well at the box office. Surprisingly though, it didn't surpass 1989's Batman numbers (both domestic and worldwide). Batman Begins' success inspired many reboots in the movie industry, but the reboot concept is rather abused in certain degree.
As for my thoughts when seeing the movie, it was the best Batfilm at the time, and Christian Bale is definitely the best Bruce Wayne/Batman to date though there are still others considered Keaton to be the best. Speaking of Bale, he was one of the popular contenders to be the 6th James Bond. At first, I felt he didn't look the part. But after seeing Batman Begins, I was wrong. In fact, there were several things of Begins that reminded me so much like Bond. Gadgets, nice cars, Q-like character played by Morgan Freeman.....not to mention Bale in the tux.
You know what? Batman Begins is more like a James Bond movie than Casino Royale (2006) will EVER be.
It's not who I am underneath. It's what I do that defines me.
