Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

TAS is designed as sequel to TOS. Hello, It's funny...the animated 'Star Trek' was on such a very low budget...so much so - that James ('Scotty') Doohan and Majel "Nurse Chapel' Barrett Roddenberry provided the voices for many different characters throughout the series...sometimes in the same episode! The budget was sooo low, that it didn't feature Pavel Chekov because they couldn't afford to pay actor Walter Koenig anything! Ironically, Walter Koenig wrote a script for the series which was made into one of the series' best episodes. Koenig's episode - "The Infinate Vulcan", had the U.S.S. Enterprise crew meeting Dr. Keniclius, a scientist who survived Earth's Eugenic Wars. An alien race abducts Spock so that Dr. Keniclius can make a giant clone of him with the intention of forcing peace on the galaxy. That premise sounds cool! By the way...the animated 'Trek' has 22 episodes in total. Take Care! P.S. Sorry FormerBondFan, I've turned your 'television thread' into an Original Series 'Star Trek' thread.

Many writers from the original live action 'Star Trek' contributed scripts to the animated series. Some of the episodes were originally intended for the third (or even possibly the fourth) season of TOS. Among these are David Gerrold's "Bem" and "More Trouble, More Tribbles". Ironically, Walter Koenig wrote a script for the series which was made intro an one of the series' best episodes. An alien race abducts Spock so that Dr. Keniclius can make a giant clone of him with the intention of forcing peace on the galaxy. I believe this is one of the episodes that causes fans to dispute whether or not the series is canon- since they don't like Spock having a clone out there. But the series also introduced many ideas which are undisputed as canon- such as Kirk's middle name (Tiberius). This is also the first Trek series to introduce the idea of the Enterprise having a holodeck.

Yes, I definately consider the animated 'Star Trek' as a sequel to 'The Original Series'. (And a good sequel, too!)

And what about TNG? Do you consider it as sequel to TOS? It's been said that it's technically a spin-off. In my opinion, it's more of sequel than a spin-off since TNG deals with the Enterprise and its adventures just like TOS did.

since TNG deals with the Enterprise and its adventures just like TOS did. It wasn't the same Enterprise, though. A good example here would be The Andy Griffith Show, which had a spin-off called Mayberry RFD. Both shows were based around the fictional town of Mayberry, and even featured many of the same supporting characters. In a technical sense, what makes both Mayberry RFD and TNG a spin-off, is the fact that they each focused upon the adventures of a completely new protagonist (ie. Sam Jones; Captain Picard). So to be a true sequel, TNG would've had to continue the adventures of Captain Kirk.

Hello, I can see where FormerBondFan and poirot are both coming from. I think the term 'spin off' is insulting to 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'. Sequel isn't quite right, either. The fact that TNG is set 100 years after the original U.S.S. Enterprise's 5 year mission with an entirely new ship and crew make it difficult to use the term sequel. 'Spin-offs' usually happen close or right at the end of the series it sprang from. Aside from TOS reruns and syndication...'Star Trek' hadn't been a weekly television series for 17 years. 'The Next Generation' was a major event, neither sequel or spin-off, it was simply a brand new bold and exciting "Star Trek". It was the on going mission of a new U.S.S. Enterprise, a new crew, with all the concepts we loved in the 'Original Series', plus new surprises. We mustn't forget the TNG and TOS were united and tied together at times with appearances by Dr. Leonard Mc Coy, Spock, Spock's father Sarek, and Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott. Also, who can forget the all too brief but wonderful meeting between Captain Picard and Captain Kirk...working together and saving millions of lives. The use of these characters was an homage to 'TOS' and kind of brought everything full circle. In my opinion, both series were so strong and well received that they were each their own entity. 'Deep Space Nine', 'Voyager', and 'Enterprise' I think would fit better into being called 'spin-offs'. Take Care!

I guess the term "spin-off" has developed something of a negative connotation over the years, although I'm not sure why. There have been lots of successful spin-offs- especially in television. (In many cases, people probably didn't even realize they were watching one!)
I don't think it demeans TNG in any way to refer to it as such. (Even the animated series is sometimes referred to as a spin-off of TOS.) In fact, it actually demonstrates just how good a spin-off can be.

One of my favorite television shows used to be "Cheers". I was very interested to see what the 'spin-off' of that series was going to be like. It turned out that as much as I loved 'Cheers', I loved 'Frasier' even more!!! Take Care!

I thought Frasier was better in Cheers as he was completly insane. Frasier is still a classic show.
The best thing in Cheers was Woody and Sam's jumper collection.

Now that Lost and Ashes to Ashes have ended I'm awaiting the next series of Dexter. I'm also looking forward to Frank Darabont's The Walking Dead.
