Bond Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz Passes Away at Age 68by Peter Hall Aug 2nd 2010 // 12:03PM Tom Mankiewicz, best recognized for his work as a screenwriter on several of James Bond's 1970s films, passed away on July 31st after losing a struggle with cancer. Mankiewicz, son of All About Eve screenwriter Joseph Mankiewicz, has his name on the screenplays for Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man With the Golden Gun, Ladyhawke, and Dragnet, but that was hardly the extent of his career. In addition to being a regular Bond writer, the L.A. Native was also a television writer and director who worked on such projects as Bob Hope Presents, Movin' With Nancy, Hart to Hart, and Tales From the Crypt. Mankiewicz was also one of Hollywood's great script fixers, often lending his talents to movies without official receiving an official, on-screen credit. As a "creative consultant," he was responsible for various duties on The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, Superman 1 & 2, Gremlins, War Games, and Batman. www.cinematical.com/2010/08/02/bond-screenwriter-tom-mankiewicz-passes-away-at-age-68/He made a great contribution to Bond.

He made a great contribution to Bond. Hello, Yes, he certainly did. I will forever be a fan of the late Mr. Mankiewicz for his contributions to the 007 franchise. Working with director Richard Donner, he also did a fabulous job with the script for 'Superman: The Movie'. My deepest condolences and sympathy to Tom Mankiewicz's family, friends, and all his fans. Take Care!

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

Sad news. I think he ran out of steam by the time of TMWTGG but his work on DAF & LALD was wonderful at times. How the series could do with his wit now.

www.dailystar.co.uk/playlist/view/147494/Moore-pays-tribute-to-Mankiewicz/ BOND legend SIR ROGER MOORE has paid tribute to Hollywood's TOM MANKIEWICZ, calling the 007 screenwriter a "wonderful man" and a "great friend". Mankiewicz passed away aged 68 at his home in Los Angeles on Friday (30Jul10) after a brief illness, and actor Moore admits the tragedy came as a "huge shock" for him. The writer penned the screenplay for many of Moore's best-known outings as Bond, including 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun and his debut as the superspy in Live and Let Die, and the two became close friends. Moore tells WENN, "Tom was a wonderful man, a brilliant writer and a great friend... His written lines were brilliant. My favourite is from The Man with the Golden Gun when Jimmy (Bond) points a gun at a gun-maker's crotch - 'Speak now or forever hold your piece' he says. Sheer bl**dy brilliance. The news of his death was a huge shock to me. At 68 it was a tragedy." The actor also paid tribute to Mankiewicz's skill at teasing viewers with his plot developments: "He was without doubt one of the most innovative, clever and inspirational writers of the Bond films. He and director Guy Hamilton would lock themselves away working out 'snake pit' scenarios for 007, and then plan inventive escapes whilst leading the the audience up one or two wrong turns. "Like in Live and Let Die when Jimmy Bond is stranded on an island in a lake full of alligators. Jimmy sees a boat nearby and switches on his magnetic watch to attract the metal oar rests - aha, say the audience, that's how he does it. But then we see the boat is tethered. Aha, says Tom! Think again, dear audience."

Live and Let Die was on television this afternoon. I like Bond's line when the baby alligators swim over. "I don't suppose those potential overnight bags are orphans?" ;D

Tom Mankiewicz was a script consultant on one of my favourite shows - Columbo. It always makes me laugh when Columbo turns up at the crime scene with a boiled egg. That was Tom Mankiewicz's main - some would say only -contribution to Columbo. Apparently, every time he was sent a Columbo script to check he would make one change - the insertion of a Coulmbo eating a boiled egg scene.

Richard Donner gets all the credit for Superman I and II, but Mankiewicz was a big part of what made those films great. They sure could've used him on Superman III and Supergirl.
