Casino Royale (2006) is the twenty-first film in the James Bond series; it was directed by Martin Campbell and the first to star Daniel Craig as MI6 agent James Bond. Based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming, it was adapted by screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Paul Haggis. It is the third screen adaptation (quite possibly the worst) of the Casino Royale novel, which was previously produced as a 1954 television episode and a 1967 satirical film. The film is set at the beginning of James Bond's career as Agent 007 (hard to believe given Bond's aged look), just as he is earning his license to kill. Please rate out of 10 and add comments as usual. I appreciate it's took a long time to get here, but I'm sure the comments will be worth it. Enjoy!!! p.s. I added '0' just in case.

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

To be honest, I'm just going to give it a 6 because it's well made. DC does great.....got to admit, but he does not classify as a classic Bond. Whether it's DC or someone else, that actor would be praised for the gritty portrayal. It's the last Bond I've seen so far, and I skipped watching it in the movie theater. I didn't rent it but my dad did. From what I recall, my dad was the only one watching it. And when my folks were sleeping, I decide to look at it myself in my laptop. When watching the whole movie, it wasn't anything special......great or not. Plus, I regretted big time since I said I wouldn't be seeing it (for EON screwing up Pierce of not giving him the right Bond script and story he wanted), but at least I didn't waste my $10 seeing it in the movie theater.
If I want to watch a reboot, I'll go for Batman Begins and Star Trek. If I want to watch a modern day Bond, I'll go for GE. And if I want to watch a gritty Bond, I'll go for LTK (my favorite outside of Pierce's).
If you don't like what I said chucky, I'll understand. And will you excuse me......I'm going to watch Star Trek (which I owned on DVD as the as the digital copy I downloaded into my laptop)?

5 out of 10. Not a fan of Martin Campbell, DC doesn't seem like Bond to me, the film grinds to a halt after Le Chiffre dies & is too long, the theme song is hopeless, the poker scenes are dull, too much clunky dialogue like when 'Bond' and Vesper banter on the train. The most overrated Bond film ever made.

Very tempting. Casino Royale is a well made modern adaption of Ian Fleming's novel. I do not agree that this is "Fleming's Bond on screen at last" as many suggest. Craig is miscast as James Bond and the intentional move away from the traditional Bond movie turned me off it. This movie is the Bond movie for those who do not like Bond movies. I'll give it 5 as it is a dreadful as a Bond movie.

This movie is the Bond movie for those who do not like Bond movies. This is the BOND MOVIE for those who do not like "stupid n ridicolous Bond" movies (Moore and Brosnan)

After DAD, fans hoped the rumours that Brosnan had been fired/resigned from the role were untrue. There used to be all these rumours after every Moore film. However the sight of a virtual unknown man caked in sun tan cream chugging along the River Thames back in 2005 put everyone back down to reality. The press conference was a dull affair with DC constantly looking at BB before giving answers, giving short answers or simply refusing to answer questions altogether. Ther following months saw massive negativity about the appointment and even DC admitted he was surprised at the reaction. BB asked the world to reserve judgement until the film was released.
Unless the film was as bad as the Sellers/Niven film (which it is'nt) it was clear the British press would big up CR. However even I was surprised at the reaction & assumed CR would be the cinematic event of 2006. Alas CR is an average low-ish budget action/ thriller. Twenty minutes too long with an unknown cast. Watchable but also forgettable, competent but unspectacular. Perhaps only interesting because it is an official Bond film.
The rookie Bond claim was probably a PR stunt as there is hardly anything in the film suggesting Bond is a rookie. BB was obviously terrified that DC would flop so tried to cover all angles, having Bond play it tough, sensitive, witty, wearing tight swimming trunks & even falling in love.
Daniel Craig himself is a decent actor but lacked the charisma, humour, looks and height of previous Bonds. His monotone voice does'nt help, however he seemed to try hard in the fight scenes.
The backing of the British media, massive PR campaign and unbelievably the Bafta's, saw CR become a commercial success. Daniel Craig was here to stay.

Hello,
Boy, back in 2005 I was beside myself with disbelief when I had learned Daniel Craig was to become the sixth 007.
When I finally saw 'Casino Royale' in theaters in December of 2006 I was cautiously optimistic. I had read Fleming's book and was eagerly anticipating how they were going to translate and modernize it for the big screen. I can't begin to express how disappointed I was when the credits rolled. I was mad because it was so different from the previous 20 Bond movies. I've never liked change, and I never will.
However, I bit the bullet, bought the DVD and have seen it many times, and have come to appreciate this movie more and more.
Allow me to tell you what I liked and didn't like about the movie:
Positives:
A 'Back to basics' Ian Fleming James Bond. He's more fallible, vulnerable, and human.
Director Martin Campbell. He has great vision and style and every penny of the film's budget shows in this picture. He actually was able to make the gambling scenes suspenseful, and exciting.
A good supporting cast, especially Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre. Definitely my favorite Bond villain since Pierce faced off against Sean Bean's Alec Trevelyan, 006 in 'Golden Eye'. Mikkelsen's performance is creepy, slimy, and evil...with a dash of charm, without being over the top. I couldn't wait to see what this guy had coming to him.
A decent, modernized adaptation of Ian Fleming's classic thriller.
Finally...a performance from Daniel Craig which has grown on me. IMO...this guy really threw himself into the part, did one hell of a job, and made it his own. I truly believe he's an extremely talented actor, it's just that...well, I'll save that for the negatives.
NEGATIVES:
A VERY POOR origin story for a classic character with oh, SO MUCH BACKGROUND!!!
Dame Judi Dench returns as 'M'. In my DVD extras...even director Martin Campbell says; "...having Judi Dench sort of totally ruins the continuity of the series. But, how can you have a Bond movie without Judi as 'M'?" Easy Martin! Recast the part!
Lack of any Bond signatures such as 'the James Bond theme', a traditional gun barrel sequence, supporting characters we know and love (Moneypenny, 'Q'). (At least we get the C.I.A.'s Felix Leiter)
Finally...as much as he has great acting chops, was physical, did a lot of his own stunts, and made the character his own...being a fan of the books and the last 20 movies, Daniel doesn't meet up to what I feel James Bond should 'look like'. He doesn't look nearly young enough for an origin 007 who's just recieved his 'Licence To Kill'. Also, Bond to me should be tall, dark, and striking in appearance. (See Timothy Dalton) Just my opinion.
All in all, a love-hate relationship with 'Casino Royale'. Having said that, I'm much more open-minded now and always enjoy this flick when I see it.
8 /10
Take Care!

Do you prefer Batman Begins over Casino Royale (2006), Alec? Hello, I MUCH prefer 'Batman Begins' over 'Casino Royale' FormerBondFan. Mostly because: - 'Batman Begins' tells a great origin story that REALLY does the character justice. - They cast a very talented actor (Christian Bale) who not only is a very gifted actor, but also looked the part and was the right age for a Batman origin. - The tease at the end of 'Batman Begins' leading to the next film was so worth waiting for, the one at the end of 'Casino Royale' wasn't. Take Care!

Bond has just been promoted to the 00 section and is a younger version of Connery, Moore, Brosnan and all, a glimpse of what Bond was like "before he became Bond". Unfortunately this premise is ruined by the casting of 40 year old Daniel Craig as this young Bond. Craig was praised for delivering as tough performance as the young, raw Bond. I though it was uncharismatic and dull. He repeated the same performance in Quantum of Solace and was criticised (or some criticised the script) for being humourless and unBondlike!! I hated the song at the start. The changes Eon introduced to turn this into an origin film such as the gunbarrel in the toilet and the dreadful ending where Craig announces he is now Bond whilst brandishing a huge machine gun are simply embarrassing. Craig's handling of the jokes and double entendres (yes there were some in this "serious film" ) is terrible and does not bode well for the predicted humour fest in Bond 23. Casino Royale is an average action film starring Daniel Craig as the lead. It's not a really awful film like its successor as it is competently made and they had the Casino Royale story to build on. But it's not really a Bond film for me, and it is not a film I can watch over and over again. 5/10
