I love those "What if?" history discussions, so I thought I'd start a what if? Bond thread. My first question is: What would have happened if Pierce Brosnan had left the Bond role after 1999? Who would have played James Bond next? Would we have had the great Daniel Craig in the role?

Favourite James Bond Films: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Mission: Impossible and any upcoming action films starring Pierce Brosnan (no, it's not James Bond which is good because he'll need it to expand his reputation as an actor, especially in the action realm)
Favourite Films: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, The Matrix, Mission: Impossible

I would be pissed if Pierce left Bond after 1999.

If Pierce had left after 3, EON would've probably gone after Clive Owen. I don't think Craig could've ever been a contender before the arrival of Jason Bourne.
I also don't think the backlash against Pierce would've been as strong prior to DAD. Fans had issues with TND and TWINE, but they still recognized them as being very true to the spirit of the series. They weren't great films, but they were pretty good James Bond films.

Dougray Scott admitted that he was approached by Eon to discuss the role prior to DAD. It doesn't mean they automatically would have chosen him. If a new James Bond actor had been required around that time Clive Owen would have been a very strong candidate. He would have been much more likely to do it back then because he wasn't as established or in demand as he quickly became.

Would Clive Owen still making James bond films today if he had been chosen in 2001?
I think they would have chosen to copy Jason Bourne. There may have been a four year gap or longer after The World Is Not Enough too.

Dougray Scott would have been a decent choice back in 2001. He gave a good action man performance alongside Tom Cruise in MI2. He also had a strong scottish accent, rather like Sean Connery. If he was bulked up and groomed up he would have looked the part. But not sure if he was over 6 feet.

Who would have chosen the new actor for the role of Bond in 1999/2000? Did Barbara Broccoli have the main opinion on the casting?

I would have liked to have seen Dougray Scott as James Bond. he looks like Bond - he looks quite tough!
If they had an Owen or Scott type for Bonds on 2002 and 2004, would they have made radical changes after Bourne and Batman Begins for Bond 22?

Would the series had been different if Harry Saltzman had stayed as one of the producers (or even become the sole producer?

Apparantly relations between Salzman and Brocoli had become unbearable. Connery once said 'both men look at each other thinking you've got half of what i should have'. Salzman was there during the Connery era. He then helped choose Lazenby, another unknown who was dark and physical like Connery. Salzman needed to be persuaded to appoint Moore as Bond, he wanted a hollywood star like Redford, Newman or Reynolds. When TMWTGG met with a poor reception he obviously thought the franchise was it's way out & quit. With Salzman out of the way, Cubby Brocoli was free to take his time and make the Bond movie he wanted. The result was TSWLM. A film as good as TSWLM may never have been made if Salzman had'nt quit.

What if Sir Roger had quit after Moonraker. He annonced he was quitting after he heard that Cubby Brocoli had been testing other actors. Only to change his mind, not for the first time.

What if Sir Roger had quit after Moonraker. Michael Billington would have been in a very good position if this scenario had unfolded.

I think he had a team of candidiates to replace Roger - all handsome with black hair, if you are taking notes Barbara!

Michael Billington and Timothy Dalton would have been candidates in 1979. Lewis Collins and Ian Ogilvy may have also been in the running. James Brolin was screen tested in 1979. He had just starred in 'Capricon One' and at 42 may have had the required dark looks to play Bond. Cubby Brocoli was so impressed with him that he signed him up to star in Octopussy. Only for Sir Roger to change his mind. Again !.
